Dry Directional Drilling
This system is called Dry Directional Drilling (DDD).
DRY, because the rigs which are performing the operations are provided with special drilling equipment powered by simple compressed air at a low pressure. Therefore there is no more bentonite mud.
DIRECTIONAL DRILLING, because the rigs are equipped with a down-the-hole guidance and steering system allowing them to control accurately the underground drilling and the installation of pipes and ducts along any path.

With SCORPIO systems for Dry Directional Drilling, the No-Dig installation ofall underground utilities is now possible. Thanks to a wide range of available models, it is possible to install underground networks where space is extremely limited, as it is also possible to proceed with road, railway, or river crossings.
The most interesting advantages of SCORPIO systems for Dry Directional Drilling:
Effectiveness and productivity: because these systems drill through a wide range of soils, even through compact hard rock, with the FTM D down-the-hole tool proving effective over 805 km of successful installations performed world-wide.
Cost-effectiveness: because air does not need to be bought, stocked, prepared or recycled, which dramatically reduces operating costs, contrary to what is required for traditional bentonite mud processes.
No surface damage: because contrary to traditional wet systems (bentonite mud and water), air does not cause soil fractures, and does not erupt to the surface, nor causes flooding of underground rooms in the vicinity of the drilling path.
Compactness: which means great operating capabilities (pullback and torque) concentrated in extremely compact machines: the power is double, with half the space and weight.
Environmentally friendly: because air is a free and everlasting resource which is non-polluting, and requires very little energy to be compressed.
